The carver is identified by the Farber Gravestone Collection as William Mumford.   The stone is made of slate.  There is a photo on the Farber Collection website that shows the Lattimore gravestone before it was encased in granite and cement.  This gravestone is an example of exquisite early carving.

    What type of stone is the headstone comprised? I have seen some beautiful older stones in granite and slate.

  2. Whoa, 1690! The material makes all the difference, doesn't it? I've seen plenty of stones much younger that are weathered to the point of illegibility.
