The carver is identified by the Farber Gravestone Collection as William Mumford. The stone is made of slate. There is a photo on the Farber Collection website that shows the Lattimore gravestone before it was encased in granite and cement. This gravestone is an example of exquisite early carving.
Marian, this is so beautifully preserved and thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat type of stone is the headstone comprised? I have seen some beautiful older stones in granite and slate.
Whoa, 1690! The material makes all the difference, doesn't it? I've seen plenty of stones much younger that are weathered to the point of illegibility.
ReplyDeleteLadies - I added more details to the post above. The gravestone is made of slate. A very long lasting material.
ReplyDeleteThat one has weathered beautifully, and both the inscription and the classic winged death's head are wonderfully preserved. Thank you, indeed.
ReplyDeleteDo you have an approximate size for this gravestone? It is so hard to know by a picture.
ReplyDeleteI recall that that stone is fairly small. Not more than 2 feet high.
DeleteThank you so much!
