  1. Is this name Hurtliff or Shurtliff? My friend and I are having a debate about it. What do you think?

  2. The surname is Shurtliff. From Drew's "Epitaphs from Burial Hill" pg 23: "188: MARY dautr To Mr. James & Mrs. Faith Shurtleff His Wife Died May 1742 in ye 13th Month of Her age."

Her mother's stone is 4 entries down:

"192. Here Lyes ye Body of Mrs FAITH SHURTIFF wife to Mr. James Shurtliff She Decd Mar ye 28th 1743 in ye 27th year of Her age."

  3. Ok I'm going ahead and changing this from Hurtliff to Shurtliff. However, I still contend that the long S in the surname is an after thought. Look at the strong S in the name James. All the S's match except for the one in the surname. I'll have to do some more research. Perhaps "From Slate to Marble 1770-1870: Gravestone Carving Traditions in Eastern Massachusetts" by James Blachowicz will help shed some light on this one.
