According to the West Hartford Historical Society, he was the slave of Sarah and Thomas Hooker.  Later he was able to buy his freedom and became very well respected in the community.

  1. Marian, it looks like a modern typeface. Were you able to discern whether it had been erected long after his death?

  2. The original stone is in the lobby of Bristow Middle School. It's in poor shape. They put up the replica in place of the original about 10 years ago.
