Here lyes ye Body
of Mr SAMUEL
HEATON, (late of
NEW HAVEN) who Died
January ye 11th 1735 in ye
26th Year of his Age.

Pine Island Historic Cemetery, Norwalk, Connecticut

Aside from the great carving work, this stone is very interesting for the addition of the unusual phrase "late of New Haven." This is helpful information for anyone researching Samuel Heaton.

There is a great Flickr photo set by someone who has taken a lot of photos in Norwalk and seems to be actively involved with the Norwalk Historical Society. You can see a series of tympanums from Pine Island Cemetery in this set. I will be featuring more from this cemetery in the coming days.

If any has any information on Samuel Heaton please share it here. Thanks!

  1. Samuel Heaton was probably the son of Nathaniel Heaton and Mary Todd. They had a son Samuel (second of that name) born 9 Dec 1709 in New Haven (from the IGI-original source of data is Barbour Collection), which would make him 25 (in his 26th year) in 1735. I am his 7th great grandniece (his brother James is my ancestor.) He is the only Samuel Heaton of the right age from New Haven that I have on record.
