According to the book Colonial Families of the United States of America (1917) edited by George Norbury Mackenzie, Sarah Plank was born in 1726 and married John Jacobs, a farmer in Thompson, CT on January 24, 1751. That would make Sarah in her 63rd year when she died. John and Sarah had eight known children. Both Sarah's husband, John, and sons, John, Jesse and Asa, were patriots during the American Revolution. This suggests that they would have likely known my ancestor, Henry Learned, who also lived in Thompson and served in the Revolution. Interestingly enough, Sarah's husband, John, lived to be 95 years old - born in 1725 and not dying until 1820.

Green Cemetery, Glastonbury, Connecticut

Glastonbury has one of the most amazing historical cemeteries I have ever been in. The quantity of old stones and gorgeous artwork is wonderful. I have a very sentimental attachment to this cemetery having visited many times before and spent numerous enjoyable occasions on the adjacent green.

Unfortunately, this visit was at completely the wrong time of day - 8:30 in the morning. The sun in east was too strong and faced the back side of the inscriptions. Nearly all the gravestones were shaded in darkness. Still I took lots of photos as a reminder of all it had to offer. I plan to go back in August and photograph at a better time of day.

If I could refocus my work to concentrate more on my own family history I would also switch to researching more about Glastonbury's history, genealogy and historic houses. Aside from my parents being family historians, I would have to ascribe my love of history and old homes to having grown up in this beautiful town.

of Mr SAMUEL
HEATON, (late of
NEW HAVEN) who Died
January ye 11th 1735 in ye
26th Year of his Age.

Pine Island Historic Cemetery, Norwalk, Connecticut

Aside from the great carving work, this stone is very interesting for the addition of the unusual phrase "late of New Haven." This is helpful information for anyone researching Samuel Heaton.

There is a great Flickr photo set by someone who has taken a lot of photos in Norwalk and seems to be actively involved with the Norwalk Historical Society. You can see a series of tympanums from Pine Island Cemetery in this set. I will be featuring more from this cemetery in the coming days.

If any has any information on Samuel Heaton please share it here. Thanks!

Imagine dying at 90 years old in 1690! He was born before the colonization of Massachusetts, sometime around 1600.

According to New England Families: Genealogical and Memorial by William Richard Cutter (1915), George Willis was born in England in 1602. He came to New England around 1636 and settled in Cambridge. He was a mason by trade.

Kezia Ames, West Bridgewater, MA - 1768

Here lies
Mrs. Kezia, wife of
Capt. Jotham Ames,
Formerly widow of
Mr. David Howard
she died March 20, 1768
in her 36th Year

Old Graveyard, West Bridgewater, Massachusetts

What a genealogical treasure this stone is - not only do you know her married name but the name of her previous husband. If only they had thought to list her maiden name.

According to the MA Vital Records to 1850 on NewEnglandAncestors.org, Kezia Haward and Jotham Ames were married in Bridgewater, MA on 16 September 1767. They weren't married a few days more than six months when she died.

According to the same source, Kezia Ames and David Haward Jr. were married 5 February 1751. It kind of makes you wonder if Kezia and her second husband were distant relations. Is anyone an Ames descendant who has the answer?

Funny enough I'M an Ames descendant. According to my records I am probably related to Kezia Ames through her great, grandfather. I have never really looked at the Ames line. They stopped as a line for me in 1754 when Mary Ames married Zachariah Gurney in Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Maybe when I chance to research more of my own family I will take a look at them.

Cemetery Conservation: Righting a stone

This morning I had the pleasure of watching cemetery conservation in action. Kai Nalenz of Gravestones Services of New England was contracted by the Vine Lake Preservation Trust to do some work on the stones in Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield, Massachusetts.

Today I got to see Kai in action. He was busy "righting" the toppled stone of a Civil War veteran.

Here Kai is digging around the gravestone before attempting to lift it up.

The lifting begins....

Kai and Vine Lake Preservation Trust President, Rob Gregg, get a
first look at the long buried inscription.

Kai cleans off the face of the gravestone.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay long enough to see him position it in place. I'll have to visit again in the next day or two. This was grueling work in 90+ F temperatures. Yet Kai and Rob were very good sports and completed this very important work.

Here Lyes Buried
the Body of Doctor
James Hersey
of Kittery Who Died
July 8th 1758 in ye 20th
Year of His Age.

Old South Cemetery, Peabody, Massachusetts

This gravestone opens up all sorts of interesting genealogical and historical questions. Did James Hersey "of Kittery" die in Kittery or in Peabody? Being only "in ye 20th Year of His Age" was he really a doctor or was he being confused with another James Hersey, perhaps his father? And the question that really begs to be asked is, what killed him at such a tender age?
